Meta is grappling with a widespread outage affecting its major platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads, and Messenger.
The issues began around 1 PM ET, with users across the US reporting disruptions on the apps and websites.
The problem has extended globally, impacting users in the UK, parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.
Downdetector, a platform that tracks online outages, has received over 130,000 complaints regarding Meta’s services.
Facebook leads the tally with more than 100,000 reports, followed by Instagram with 62,000, WhatsApp with 11,000, Messenger with 10,000, and Threads with 871.
In a statement on X, Meta Newsroom acknowledged the issue: “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
The most reported problems on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads involve the app, website, and server connections. For Messenger and WhatsApp, users are facing difficulties with the app, logging in, and sending messages.
Frustrated users have taken to Elon Musk’s platform, X, to express their dissatisfaction, with some criticizing Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
One user quipped: “Elon Musk to Mark Zuckerberg: ‘You’re sinking, my friend.’”
Another added: “Mark Zuckerberg needs to work on this because it’s becoming too frequent.”
Memes circulating on X also poke fun at the situation, with some joking about Zuckerberg downloading X due to the outage.
Meta’s last significant outage occurred in October, disrupting Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.
