Passengers abducted from a Benue State Transport Company bus, popularly known as Benue Links, have regained their freedom, barely a week after they were kidnapped.
The bus, which departed Abeokuta, Ogun State, en route to Makurdi, was intercepted by gunmen at Eke, in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, around 6:30 pm on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
While the Benue State Police Command earlier said it deployed combined security forces and drones in a rescue operation, sources told PUNCH Online that the victims were freed on Sunday afternoon, seven days after their abduction.
It was gathered that the passengers were received at the Okpokwu Divisional Police Station, while two of the passengers, who were said to be in critical condition, were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.
The Information Officer of the state transport company, Ehi Johnson, confirmed the release of the passengers on Sunday evening.
He, however, said that the circumstances surrounding their freedom remain sketchy
He said, “We have information that the passengers have been released but the report is still sketchy, more information will be made available to the public soon.”
Meanwhile, the State Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive a formal report about the passengers’ release.
