As new technology, automation, and global shifts transform the world of work, Nigeria’s maritime workers continue to grapple with extreme hardship, poor welfare, and uncertainty in the industry. Unlike advanced maritime nations where education, training, and workers’ rights are prioritised, Nigeria faces unemployment and a shortage of qualified seafarers. Calls for the revival of a national line, supported by the new minister, could open doors for cadets and maritime professionals to receive proper certification and training.
