In a bold step towards strengthening labour relations and enhancing workers’ welfare in Nigeria’s maritime sector, Melsmore Marine Limited and the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have officially signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) — a milestone that underscores mutual respect, industrial harmony, and shared commitment to workforce development.
The agreement, which was concluded earlier this week at the company’s Victoria Island headquarters in Lagos, marks a new chapter in Melsmore’s operational framework, positioning it among the few forward-thinking maritime firms in the country that prioritize the welfare and dignity of their workers.
Speaking at the signing, the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, hailed the development as “a landmark achievement for both the management of Melsmore and the leadership of the Union.” He emphasized that no responsible industrial organization can thrive without prioritizing the wellbeing of its workforce and upholding ethical labour standards.
“Melsmore has demonstrated that it understands the rhythm of a productive industrial environment — where workers are treated with fairness, dignity, and adequate remuneration,” Comrade Bunu said. “When workers are happy, productivity grows, and so does the company.”
The agreement includes a reviewed wage structure and improved welfare conditions, reflecting the current economic realities in Nigeria. According to MWUN, the move will not only uplift the morale of the company’s employees but also enhance efficiency, loyalty, and long-term productivity.
Comrade Bunu also assured Melsmore’s management of the Union’s continued cooperation in maintaining industrial peace, describing the relationship as a model for other operators in the maritime industry to emulate.
In his closing remarks, MWUN’s Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, commended Melsmore’s management for its openness and willingness to engage the Union in constructive dialogue, a gesture that led to what he called “a harmonious and progressive partnership for the good of all.”
With this agreement, Melsmore Marine Limited joins a growing list of maritime firms championing fair labour practices and setting new standards in employee relations within Nigeria’s blue economy.
