Better Deals for Indigenous Sailors Could Transform the Maritime Industry

Nigeria cannot keep applauding its seafarers once a year and then abandoning them to harsh working realities at sea. The renewed call for better welfare is timely because, without sailors, there is no maritime trade, and without maritime trade, the wider economy suffers.

The demand for improved welfare is driven by a few hard facts. Maritime transport carries more than four-fifths of global trade by volume, yet the Nigerian sailor often works in conditions that fall short of global best practice. Their peers in better-organised maritime systems usually enjoy stronger safety nets, steadier career progression, better pay, and more effective labour protection. By contrast, Nigerian sailors must also contend with insecurity, piracy fears, weak shipboard welfare, delayed wages, limited training opportunities, and poor enforcement of standards.

Their daily work is demanding enough without the added burden of neglect. Many spend long periods away from home, work punishing schedules, and operate under pressure aboard vessels that may not meet the highest safety standards. Access to medical support is often inadequate, mental health care is weak, and dispute resolution can be slow or ineffective. Too often, the sailor is expected to keep commerce moving while his own welfare is treated as an afterthought.

The gap between Nigerian sailors and their better-supported counterparts elsewhere is therefore not merely about comfort but also competitiveness. In stronger maritime economies, welfare is built into the system. Training is more regular, compliance is tighter, welfare institutions are stronger, and labour protections are enforced more consistently. The result is a more confident workforce and a maritime sector that can attract and retain talent. Nigeria cannot ask for excellence from its sailors while underinvesting in the conditions that produce it.

Their contribution to the economy is substantial. Seafarers keep cargo moving, support port operations, sustain supply chains, and enable Nigeria to participate in international commerce. They help power imports, exports, and the logistics networks that generate revenue, foreign exchange, and employment. They are not on the margins of trade. They are part of its engine room.

The way forward is clear. Their welfare must be improved through stronger protection, insurance cover, better remuneration, and prompt payment. Training, certification, and firmer enforcement of safety and labour standards should be sustained. These are not generous extras but the minimum requirements of a serious maritime nation.

The burden now rests on the table of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, to move beyond speeches and lay a solid foundation for the sector. As the pioneer minister of the portfolio, he has a rare chance to prioritise sailors’ welfare and build a marine economy that is both humane and productive. That is how the industry gains credibility, resilience, and long-term value.

We must give our indigenous sailors the better deal they deserve.
