Owerri – The Imo State Police Command on Wednesday said the operatives killed one suspected armed robber and injured others.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri.
He said the incident took place at Dominion Street near Don Kay, in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo state, during a gun battle between the operatives and the armed robbers.
He said the police moved into action based on the distress call it received from the residents.
He said: “Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate terrorizing the residents of Owerri North LGA of Imo State. This breakthrough is a result of enhanced security measures initiated by Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, targeting violent crimes, especially at night.
On October 15, 2024, at approximately 3:20 AM, a patrol team from the Owerri North Divisional Headquarters responded swiftly to a distress call about an armed robbery on Dominion Street near Don Kay, in Owerri North LGA. Upon arrival, the police encountered armed robbers who opened fire on them. The officers, demonstrating bravery, manoeuvred into strategic positions and effectively returned fire.”
“During the confrontation, one suspect was neutralized, while another named, Moses Nanzi ‘m’, 31 years of Faringada from Plateau State sustained a gunshot injury and was arrested. The remaining gang members fled into the bushes. A double-barrel gun and seven rounds of live cartridges were recovered from the arrested suspect.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects. The suspect will certainly face prosecution upon completion of a thorough investigation. The Imo State Police Command remains committed to ensuring residents’ safety and urges the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest Police Station or via 0803 477 3600.
