Eno extends tenure of Transition Administration of LG Councils
GOVERNOR Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has extended the tenure of Transition Administration of Local Government Councils for the next six months when elections are expected to be conducted into the Councils.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Prince Enobong Uwah, announced this in a statement dated 6th June 2024 and made available to newsmen on Friday in Uyo.
The state House of Assembly had on Thursday June, 6th during its plenary granted the governor approval to extend the tenure of Transition Committees following a report of the Assembly Committee on local government and chieftaincy affairs.
Presenting his Committee’s report on the floor of the House,Chairman Elder Mfon Idung stated, “Most of the Local government Transition Committee made judicious use of the funds allocated to their councils. There was no local government council without a signature project”.
It could be recalled that the House had initially refused to grant the governor’s tenure elongation request pending assessment of performance of the Chairmen.
Accordingly, the SSG in the statement on Friday noted, Consequent upon the resolution of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the matter of extension of the tenure of the Transition Administration of Local Government Councils, the House granted the Governor powers to extend the tenure of the Transition Committees of the local government areas for the next six months.
“His Excellency, the governor, Pastor Umo Eno has therefore extended the tenure of the Chairmen , Vice Chairmen, Secretaries and Members of the Transition Committees in all the 31 Local government areas effective immediately.
“The extension is based on the conclusions of the House of Assembly’s visit to the 31 Local government areas as well as Verification Team set up by His Excellency , the governor to authenticate projects so far executed by the Transition Chairmen.
“His Excellency, the Governor , expects that the Transition Council Chairmen will ensure the delivery of effective and people-centric governance at the grassroots level, in line with the ARISE Agenda “
The six months tenure of the Transition Committees in the state ends Friday June 7th 2024.
