Nigerian singer Mabel Green, popularly known as Gussy Baby, has made it clear in an interview with Potpourri that she will not compromise her values in the pursuit of fame, insisting that modesty and creativity will define her brand in the music industry.
On the subject of music videos and fashion choices, the singer maintained a firm stance on modest dressing. “Not at all. I will promote African dressing and our culture.
Our culture frowns at indecent dressing,” she said when asked if fans should expect revealing outfits in her visuals. She added that wearing anything shorter than bum shorts is not something she intends to do.
She was also direct when asked about appearing in bikinis. “Personally, hell no, unless that is enforced by my producer. I will only like to flaunt my shoulders and legs. I am not a fan of indecent dressing,” she said.
Despite her unconventional stance in an industry often driven by trends, the singer remains optimistic about her chances of success. “Yes, it will sell with good music. It depends on your push and your mindset. If you are determined that you can make it, you will go far in the music industry,” she said.
The singer, who first caught public attention after her impressive outing at Project Fame West Africa Season 9, said she has set strict personal rules for herself as she continues to grow her career. “I want to ensure I don’t do what other artistes are doing,” she said, stressing her desire to carve out a unique identity. According to her, creativity in visuals and music production will help her stand out in a competitive industry.
Speaking on her approach to music-making, Gussy Baby expressed concern about the current trend where production often overshadows lyrical depth. “These days, many artistes concentrate more on their beats and sounds, making the lyrics suffer,” she noted, adding that she plans to keep her sound balanced and meaningful.
