Three Lagos residents have filed a N40million suit against the Ikeja Electric Ltd, IE, before a Lagos High Court for alleged illegal disconnection of electricity supply to their apartments over a ‘fictitious debt.’
The three residents, Christopher Awosika, Femi Shonubi and Femi Osayintolu in the suit filed on their behalf by Evan Ufeli, claimed that they had been using prepaid meter since 2019 but were shocked when in 2022, IE officials suddenly sent them an estimated bill of about N1million in their old meter.
They averred that since their prepaid meter was installed by Ikeja Electric officials in 2019, there was never a notification of any outstanding bill to them until 2022 when IE wrote them about an outstanding N1million.
The customers further averred that they had cleared all their outstanding bills on the old meter before the prepaid meter was installed and claimed that despite being aware of this, Ikeja Electric continued to bill them on the old meter on the ground that there was no official letter from them to stop the old bill.
The trio claimed that after they lodged a complaint at IE office, the bill was reduced to N250,000 but they maintained that they did not owe any outstanding debt prompting IKEDC to disconnect their house.
They further claimed that the action of IE has thrown their resident in total darkness and that their complaint to the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, did not yield any positive result.
They are asking the court to amongst other things declare the disconnection of their electricity supply by IE as wrongful, illegal and a breach of contractual agreement.
They are also asking for N40million as general damages for the nuisance, unnecessary and wanton embarrassment and hardship occasioned upon them by IE.
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.
