Barring any change of mind, there may soon be a bill in the National Assembly for an act that will compel relevant authorities to regulate Artificial Intelligence, AI and make it pay for data scraped from media platforms without authorisation.
Hi-Tech gathered that some media managers are putting plans in place to ensure a legislation that will not only protect the data that media professionals sourced under painstaking conditions but make AI pay, should it scrape them unauthorised.
Some of them who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development but added that they have also been sensitizing media organisations and information managers to try and build firewalls around their data in a way AI could not find them easy to scrape for free.
“AI is in business just as we are. So we cannot suffer to source very important data and AI will scrape it in the name of offering free information. As we speak, there are plans to birth a legislation that will regulate what AI does, particularly as it relates to taking our information for free without authorisation.
“Meanwhile before this comes into place, we advise every media organisation that values data it sourced painstakingly, to build firewalls around those data. The stock-in-trade of AI is scraping them without authorisation and presenting them as if they own the copyright,” they added.

NCC maintains Tech neutrality
A reliable source at the NCC who didn’t want his name mentioned, said: “We are technology neutral and have repeatedly said we don’t have any intention to regulate any technology that brings innovation”.
Some AI users and business people are also seeing the whole idea of regulation as capable of stifling innovation and technological advancement.
They are looking at various business capabilities AI can engender in various sectors of the economy and strongly claim that regulating the technology will slow down such capabilities.
Gideon Ekeoba, a content creator, described the attempt as unnecessary paranoia by the same people AI has helped most. He said: “As a content creator, AI is an important tool and has sharpened my skills. I also know that the technology has significantly impacted journalism and digital media, providing tools that enhance various aspects of the profession. The bane of technological advancement in this part of the world is unnecessary paranoia over innovations, even when they help our cause. This has to stop or we will remain peripheral in the global village.
“Are natural language processing tools, like grammarly, wordsmith; content creation tools like ChatGPT and Copy.ai and automated transcription services like Otter and Trint which have tremendously helped the media not AI-enabled? he queried.
