MWUN Election: Comrade Francis Bunu Promises enhanced member welfare, maritime industry growth

Delta State—Comrade Francis Abi Bunu, the recipient of the 2024 “Most Outstanding Seafarer” award, has pledged to improve workers’ welfare, promote the growth and stability of the maritime industry, and ensure the prompt payment of pension funds if elected president-general of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on March 28, 2025.
Bunu, a seasoned seafarer and the current deputy president-general of MWUN, outlined his vision during a meeting with colleagues. He emphasized his commitment to fostering industrial harmony through strategic collaborations with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Highlighting his agenda for the upcoming four-year tenure, Bunu promised to prioritize:
Timely pension payments and improved welfare benefits for maritime workers.
Streamlined seafarer verification processes to enhance operational efficiency.
The elimination of bureaucratic delays.
Bridging the gap between management and workers.
Provision of enhanced recreational facilities to boost morale and well-being.
“My priority is to ensure improved welfare for maritime workers, timely pension payments, and the growth and stability of the maritime industry. Transparency and inclusiveness will define my leadership,” Bunu stated.
An anonymous union member expressed confidence in Bunu’s leadership, describing him as a seasoned advocate for maritime workers’ welfare and an ideal candidate for the president-general position.
“Comrade Francis Abi Bunu has demonstrated transformational leadership throughout his career,” the source said. “His ideas have significantly contributed to the growth and stability of the maritime industry. His recognition with the 2024 ‘Most Outstanding Seafarer’ award is a testament to his dedication.”
The member further praised Bunu’s ability to bridge gaps between workers and management, advocate for better working conditions, and foster strategic collaborations. “In an era where visionary leadership is crucial, Bunu stands out as a beacon of hope and progress. Electing him as president-general of MWUN means investing in transformational leadership and unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare,” the source concluded.
