Stranded passengers at Lagos airport blame outcome of 2023 polls for strike
Following the picketing of domestic wings of Murtala Muhammad International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, passengers have lamented the flight disruption.
Those who spoke to Vanguard said although the demand of labour unions were legitimate, the strike action was a result of the citizenry’s actions and inactions at the 2023 general elections.
A passenger who identified himself as Destiny told Vanguard that he felt bad about the development, saying Nigerian youths must stand up to salvage the country.
He said: “I feel bad because we caused this situation for ourselves. This is what we chose. During the election, we made this choice. This is what we want, and it will continue like this until when we wake up.
“It will continue like this until the youths of Nigeria decide to wake up and change this situation. How could people collect rice during the election and put us into this mess? We are in this together. This is very late.
“Why are they making their demands now? They know the truth. Everybody knows the truth. They have come here to stop people from travelling, but after one week, they will call off the strike. I bet that before the next three days, they will call off this strike. I am not in support of these things. Let us enjoy Nigeria as it is.”
Another passenger, Stanley, on his part, said: “It’s really disappointing. I don’t blame the people who blocked the gates. They are here for a legitimate cause. I hope that our government can think in a better way, and make sure that people don’t suffer like this. I was supposed to be on a flight for one pm because I am going to Enugu. Unfortunately, there is no information on the next steps. I do not know what will happen to my ticket now, and that is unfortunate.”
