Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has directed all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu, who said the decision is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.
According to the statement, the resignation requirement applies to all categories of political appointees seeking to participate in party primaries or contest for any elective office.
Those affected include commissioners, advisers, directors-general, executive assistants, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants to the governor, and other political office holders in the state.
The government directed that all affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government not later than the stipulated deadline.
It further instructed that outgoing appointees should hand over to the Permanent Secretary or the most senior career officer in their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The statement urged all concerned to comply strictly with the directive.
