Nigeria’s drive for more efficient and technology-driven port operations will take centre stage on April 30, 2026, as the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria hosts its highly anticipated second-quarter conference in Lagos, bringing together key players across the maritime value chain.
The conference, scheduled to hold at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, is themed “Attaining Port Efficiency in the Face of Emerging Technology,” and is expected to spark high-level conversations on how innovation, automation and collaboration can unlock Nigeria’s port potential amid persistent infrastructural and operational challenges.
Designed as a strategic dialogue platform, the event will convene stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping global port systems—and what Nigeria must do to remain competitive.
Discussions will also spotlight longstanding inefficiencies affecting key ports, including those in Warri, Calabar and Port Harcourt.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Raymond Tedunjaiye, AMJON reaffirmed its role as a credible voice in the maritime sector, noting that its conferences have consistently provided a platform for policy-shaping conversations and industry-driven solutions.
According to him, outcomes from the conference will be formally documented and presented to relevant government authorities, reinforcing the association’s commitment to influencing policy direction and driving measurable progress in the sector.
The event is expected to attract top agencies including the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, and the Nigeria Police Force, alongside terminal operators, maritime labour unions and private sector stakeholders.
Among the dignitaries anticipated are the Comptroller-General of Customs, the Managing Director of NPA, the Director-General of NIMASA, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, as well as industry captains and port managers.
A key highlight of the conference will be an awards segment recognising individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the growth and transformation of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
Speaking on the significance of the gathering, AMJON President, Vera Osokpo, noted that the conference is deliberately structured to tackle pressing industry concerns, particularly the integration of technology into port operations.
She pointed out that while digital transformation and smart port systems are gaining traction globally, Nigeria must address infrastructural bottlenecks such as poor road networks, limited rail connectivity and unstable power supply to fully realise the benefits.
Osokpo added that discussions will explore practical trade facilitation strategies that balance efficiency with security, while also promoting automation, digital processes and innovation-driven reforms.
Reinforcing its position as a leading voice in Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy ecosystem, AMJON assured participants of robust engagements, expert-led sessions and valuable networking opportunities aimed at fostering partnerships and accelerating sustainable industry growth.
