CERON to FG: Labour strike ‘ll worsen hardship, avert it
The Campaign for Equal Rights and Opportunities for all Nigerians, CERON, has urged the federal government to take steps to avert the looming strike by organised labour as it might worsen the hardship in the country and also spark unrest.
The CERON Secretary, Francis Odiir in a statement issued weekend cautioned that “Nigerians are hungry and angry over the economic crisis in the country and anything that could excercebate the situation should be averted.”
He berated the Federal Government for not showing commitment to its negotiation with organised labour on the new minimum wage “which forced labour to opt for the strike they have called.”
He said: “We had expected the Federal Government to come up with a new minimum wage even without prompting by labour, because after May 29, 2023 when the President ended petrol subsidy Nigerians have witnessed the worst economic turmoil that left everyone badly impoverished.
“The last one year was a period of unimaginable pains for all Nigerians. It was difficult for most Nigerians to feed their families and many of our children have dropped out of school because their parents can no longer cater for them.
“That is why most Nigerians are surprised that the Fedeal Government went to negotiate with labour making proposals that seemed to ridicule the suffering masses.
“The government negotiating team did not show that the government appreciated the implication of its economic policies and the suffering of Nigerians who have been at the receiving end of the harsh policies.
“It is unfortunately that we are where we are but the government must do everything possible to avert this strike because it would worsen the suffering of Nigerians and possibly heat up the polity which could lead to unrest.”
