Edo community wants government intervention over relocation of examination centre
BENIN CITY – THE people of Obazuwa Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki and all the authorities to intervene on the relocation of the Common Entrance Examination Centre in their community to Ikoro town a riverine area. .
The community protested the relocation of the school carrying placards with various inscriptions and in a letter to the governor, signed by Pa. Roland Aimuamwonsa Oyemwense, Odionwere and Elder Dennis Ibizugbe, the Secretary of the community appealed to the governor to prevail on the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to reverse the decision.
According to them, “It is known by all that since inception, the Common Entrance Examinations have been approved by the State Government to be conducted and written in Obazuwa Primary School and this venue serves all the surrounding villages within Obazuwa including the said Ikoro village.
“It is disheartening to note that, the ljaw people in lkoro Village had in connivance with the unsuspecting SUBEB and unsuspecting State actors instigated the relocation of the venue for this examination to Ikoro Village.
“We are very disturbed about this development not only because it embarrasses our sensibilities as a bigger and sub-urban Community than Ikoro Village but also because of the serious security implications this has for our children”.
“We are apprehensive that school pupils from Obazuwa and other neighbouring villages could be drowned in the rivers of lkoro, maimed, kidnapped and face other existential threats if they are made to go and write common entrance exams in Ikoro waterside. Let it be put on record that the people of Obazuwa Community issued a warning on this matter beforehand.”
One of the elders, Pa Sunday Egharevba said “ we are not supporting the relocation because we have been doing this examination in this school since 1984, we will not let our children to be going there from this village”.
Also Mrs Gift Odion said “I grew up to meet that this is where we do common entrance examination, these people have come here to attack us and killed our people now they want us to there and write examination”, on his part, Osaze Idugboe said “The Ikoro Ijaws are not friends to Obazuwa we are pleading , we don’t need communal war. In 2001, Ikoro came to attack us to burn down the community. They killed somebody here and the body is still in the mortuary, we are scared of them, 2011 they attacked us and injured me and others, for nine years we were on the court before we got victory.”
