‘Give him time, sack him,’ Mixed reactions as Finidi George comes under fire after Benin loss
Fans of the Super Eagles of Nigeria have expressed their frustration and disappointment after the team, led by coach Finidi George, failed to secure a victory against Benin Republic in their recent World Cup qualifier.
Nigeria initially took the lead with a stunning strike from Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika. However, Benin Republic mounted a comeback to win the match 2-1.
The turning point came when a defensive lapse by Calvin Bassey allowed Sochaux winger Jodel Dossou to capitalize and score past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Minutes before halftime, further defensive errors allowed Steve Mounie to score from close range.
In an attempt to salvage the game, Coach Finidi George introduced Victor Boniface, Paul Onuachu, and other players, but the Benin defense held firm.
The loss marks a continuation of Nigeria’s struggles in the World Cup qualifiers.
Under Finidi George’s leadership, the team has now recorded one draw and one loss, remaining winless with only three points out of a possible twelve from four games.
The performance has sparked mixed reactions on social media platforms Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
Some fans are calling for Finidi George’s dismissal, while others believe the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should give him more time to turn things around.
@RealOluadah: It’s too early to rate him. This is just his second game at the helm. It was wrong of
@thenff to start a trial and error on an untested gaffer with a side that’s fighting to qualify for the World Cup competition. It was too much of a risk. I wouldn’t blame Mr George. He’s still learning the ropes and it’s too early to appraise him.
@Trhymesz: Give the man some time…
@Oladapomikky1: In a group, where we have Benin, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria, they are lying 5th. This golden generation of attackers will not experience the World Cup. It is sad.
Finidi George no try at all .
@Olatu125: He should be sacked
@Govmentson: No patient. He should be sacked with immediate effect
