How to go far in life, Fashola counsel’s youths
Add positive attitude to talent, he says
Former Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has counselled youths to add positive attitude to whatever talents they have if they want to go far in life.
According to him, though we are in an era where talents are greatly rewarded, having poor and bad attitude can be a great stumbling block to making good use of such talents.
He stated this on Tuesday while delivering a lecture titled ” Embracing the future: Navigating the intersection of technology and humanity” as part of the activities to mark the 27th convocation ceremony of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo Lagos.
Fashola, who also served as the Minster of Works and Power in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, told the graduating students that failure on their part to imbibe good and positive attitudes would make them become educated relics in the end.
He challenged the graduands to think ahead and have belief in their ability to achieve the desired results and not get stuck in one achievement.
“If you are stuck in celebrating one achievement, you may be creating obstacles to the next achievement. This in part is why I have chosen to speak about “Embracing the Future: Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Humanity.”
“So let me go back to my promise to share with you some important things that other people said because you might not remember what I say. Sometime in 1992, a football club manager disbanded his ageing team of players and reconstituted it with very young largely inexperienced people.
“The media was very critical and unsparing of his audacious decision. They criticised him in many reports, one of which remains evergreen today. It was titled, “you can’t win anything with kids.” Those young players went on to prove everybody except their manager wrong. They won the league that year against the odds.
“The manager was to have the last say in response to the media statement that you cannot win anything with kids. He said, “You can’t win anything without them.”
“That manager’s name was Sir Alex Ferguson, and his decision to trust in young talent became a cornerstone of Manchester United’s future successes, illustrating the importance of nurturing and believing in emerging talent.
Just as ‘Fergie’s Fledglings,’ as they were called, brought victory through their determination and hard work, our collective belief in new and innovative ideas will drive us towards greater success and innovation in our endeavours, ” he said.
In her address, the Vice Chancellor, LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, said technology has impacted education in ways never thought of before.
“Today, technology is the single biggest innovation that shaped and continues to change the world of today, creating adaptive never-before-known tools and applications that meet the needs of businesses and institutions, improve efficiency, enhance accessibility to solutions and services and guarantee better quality of life. In the domain of education, for example, technology has facilitated online learning, making education accessible to a wider audience. Besides, e-learning platforms, digital textbooks, and virtual classrooms have enabled continuous education, even during disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Technology continues to enhance our lives and the ways we communicate, educate our learners, move around and do business, but the debates on how it impacts humanity both now and, in the future, have not been sufficiently addressed. For instance, it has been argued that technology is separating us from our common humanity, making us more isolated, eroding our privacy, hampering our abilities for genuine empathy as a result of dependence on virtual communication, and fostering a culture of instant gratification that can undermine patience and deeper connections. Not all people agree with these positions. But these observations are telling for our future as a people and need to be addressed, ” she noted.
Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, opined that it would be foolhardy to ignore the importance of technology in today’s world.
He reiterated the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to giving the sector the attention it needs as part of the THEMES Agenda of the administration.
The Chairman of the occasion, Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, said LASU has made tremendous progress under Olatunji-Bello.
He added that he could beat his chest about the quality of graduates produced by the university.
