I Go Dye urges police reform, calls for accountability in open letter to IGP

Popular comedian and social commentator Francis Agoda, widely known as I Go Dye, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s policing system, urging the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to prioritise justice, transparency and public trust.

In an open letter addressed to the police chief, the entertainer expressed deep concern over the recent killing of a young boy in Warri and what he described as a pattern of police brutality across the country. He warned that such incidents continue to erode public confidence in the Nigerian Police Force and widen the gap between citizens and law enforcement.

I Go Dye noted that many Nigerians now approach interactions with police officers with fear and frustration, alleging that instead of protection, citizens often encounter harassment and intimidation. According to him, the situation has created widespread anger and distrust among the populace.

Referencing the lingering impact of the End SARS protests, he said the demonstrations highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and accountability within the force. He stressed that officers found guilty of unlawful killings or abuse must face not only internal disciplinary measures but also criminal prosecution.

The comedian further cautioned that failure to address these concerns transparently could trigger renewed public unrest, emphasising that the current moment presents a critical test of leadership for the police hierarchy.

He urged the IGP to implement meaningful reforms, including improved training, better welfare for officers, and a stronger commitment to community policing built on mutual respect and trust.

I Go Dye concluded by appealing to the police leadership to seize the moment to rebuild public confidence, stating that Nigeria needs a police force that inspires hope rather than fear.

Your Excellency,

I write with a heavy heart over the recent killing of a young boy in Warri, and the continued reports of police brutality across Nigeria. These incidents are painful reminders of a growing crisis that has deeply destroyed public confidence in the Nigerian Police Force.

Today, many Nigerians live with frustration and fear in their daily encounters with law enforcement. Instead of protection, they often experience harassment, intimidation, and, in tragic cases, loss of innocent lives. This reality has created a widening gap between the police and the people a gap filled with anger, distrust, and disappointment.

The memory of the End SARS protests still lingers. It was a moment that revealed the depth of public frustration and the urgent demand , there must be swift, public, and transparent justice. Any officer found responsible for unlawful killings or abuse must face the full weight of the law. Not internal discipline alone, but criminal accountability that sends a clear message: that no one is above the law.
If this current situation is not handled with transparency, accountability, and genuine commitment to change the narrative the consequences could once again escalate beyond control.

This is a defining moment for your leadership. It is a time to act decisively, to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done. by you .
Those responsible for unlawful actions must be held accountable. At the same time, meaningful reforms must be implemented, including better training, improved welfare for officers, and a renewed focus on community policing built on respect and trust.
