The Ijaw–Itsekiri conflict is one of the most significant ethnic disputes in Nigeria’s Niger Delta history. What began as disagreements over land ownership and political representation eventually escalated into violent clashes, particularly in and around Warri.
The discovery of oil in the region intensified tensions, as communities competed for control of resource-rich territories and the economic benefits attached to them. The conflict led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of thousands of people.
Today, peace efforts by community leaders, traditional rulers, and government agencies have helped reduce tensions, but the conflict remains an important lesson on the need for unity, dialogue, and fair resource distribution in the Niger Delta.
