As Muslims across Nigeria and the world celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, the President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has called on Nigerians to embrace tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and love for one another despite the prevailing economic hardship and insecurity confronting the nation.
The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has urged Nigerians, particularly the Muslim faithful, to uphold the values of unity, sacrifice, and compassion as they mark this year’s Eid Mubarak celebration.
In a goodwill message released to commemorate the Sallah festival in honour of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), the labour leader praised Muslims across the country for their resilience and unwavering faith in the face of mounting socio-economic challenges.
Comrade Bunu noted that despite the growing insecurity, violent crimes, and economic hardship affecting many parts of the country — especially in the northern region — Nigerians have continued to demonstrate patience, tolerance, and commitment to peaceful coexistence.
The maritime union leader expressed deep concern over the suffering being experienced by many citizens, describing the current period as one of the most difficult moments in Nigeria’s recent history.
“In spite of the hardship and insecurity confronting the nation, Nigerians have continued to show faith, resilience, and love towards one another. Muslims especially have remained steadfast in their belief that with Allah, nothing is impossible,” he stated.
The Ijaw-born labour activist also reflected on the spiritual significance of Eid-el-Kabir, emphasizing the importance of sacrifice, humility, and compassion towards humanity. According to him, the season should serve as a reminder for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and support one another through difficult times.
While acknowledging the economic realities facing ordinary Nigerians, Comrade Bunu appealed to governments at all levels to intensify efforts aimed at improving citizens’ welfare and alleviating poverty. He stressed that many Nigerians are struggling below acceptable living standards and require urgent interventions to make life more meaningful.
The MWUN President-General, however, commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its efforts toward repositioning the country and tackling insecurity and inflation. He expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and security measures would eventually restore stability and peace across troubled regions of the nation.
“We pray that the spirit of Eid Mubarak will usher in the peace and positive change Nigerians desire. The government must continue to look into the plight of the people so that the average Nigerian can live with dignity and hope,” he added.
Comrade Bunu further encouraged Nigerians to continue living peacefully irrespective of ethnic or religious differences, stressing that love, understanding, and unity remain critical to national progress.
According to him, the essence of Eid-el-Kabir goes beyond celebration, as it calls for selflessness, tolerance, and unwavering faith in God during difficult times.
He concluded by wishing Muslims and all Nigerians a peaceful and joyous Sallah celebration, urging citizens not to lose hope in the country’s future.
