There will be no third-place play-off in Euro 2024 after UEFA scrapped it.
The third-place playoff is often considered the game no one wants to be a part of, with all players, coaches, and fans preferring to be at the final. Although winning does come with a bronze medal, there is not much else to gain.
This year’s losing semi-finalists will be spared the contest in Germany. UEFA initially abolished the third-place playoff after the 1980 tournament due to declining television ratings and attendance.
On Tuesday night, Spain secured a spot in the final with a thrilling 2-1 victory over France. As a result, Les Bleus have concluded their participation in the tournament.
The other semi-final will feature England against the Netherlands, with the winner set to face Spain in Sunday’s final.
The third-place match has not been a part of the Euros since 1980, when Czechoslovakia defeated hosts Italy 9-8 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
