May Day: Merchant Navy Union President Calls for Improved Security, Welfare for Nigerian Workers

Kindly share this story

As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Workers’ Day on Thursday, the National President of the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association, Chief Engr. Bob Joseph Yousuo, has congratulated all Nigerian workers while calling on the government to prioritize the protection of their rights and welfare.

In his 2025 May Day message, Yousuo acknowledged the vital role Nigerian workers play in driving the nation’s economic growth, noting that their dedication and sacrifice cannot be overstated. He, however, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country, warning that no state in Nigeria is currently safe for workers.

“Nigerian workers are exposed daily to the dangers of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes. This is unacceptable,” he said. “The government must live up to its constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of its citizens.”

The union leader also addressed pressing economic issues affecting the workforce, including rising inflation, the removal of fuel subsidies, and the delayed implementation of a new minimum wage. According to him, many Nigerian workers are struggling to afford basic necessities such as food and shelter due to the high cost of living.

“This May Day, Nigerian workers stand united for a better tomorrow,” Yousuo declared. “We are demanding decent work, secure jobs, fair wages, and bold climate action. At the same time, we reject authoritarianism, corporate greed, and division.”

He emphasized that Nigerian workers are organized, united, and determined to build a brighter future. “Across states and industries, we are fighting for democracy, climate justice, safe work, and dignity for all,” he said.

Chief Engr. Yousuo, whose association is affiliated with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), London, called on federal, state, and local governments to collaborate in addressing the challenges facing workers.

He urged the government to create a conducive work environment, implement good welfare packages, and ensure the safety of workers, especially seafarers who operate in high-risk zones.

Commending workers for their resilience and perseverance, Yousuo also appealed to employers to pay fair and living wages, recognize the value of Nigerian labour, and respect Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) in their workplaces.
