ASABA – A Delta State High Court sitting at Asaba, has sentenced a police Inspector, Mr. Ubi Ebri to death for a murder charge.
The police inspector was accused of killing one Mr Ibeh Onyeka, a telephone repairer and seller on 5 April, 2023, while on a stop and search duty along the Ugbolu Asaba Road, in the State capital.
Recall that the incident caused pandemonium in the city as youths took to the streets in protest against the killing.
The Prosecution led by Messrs E.H Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, alleged that the defendant, was part of the Police Patrol team that mounted the stop and search exercise.
The deceased and his wife were said to be driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were flagged down by the police team for search.
The defendant was said to have opened fire into the vehicle leaving the deceased dead after he was hit on the head by bullets.
The wife of the deceased who sat in the front seat with him was however, unhurt.
The Court, presided over by Justice C. D Diai convicted and sentenced defendant to death.
