The Igbo National Council, INC, yesterday, rejected the call for a single term of six years for the President and governors in Nigeria, adding that it would encourage massive looting in office.
The INC President, Chilos Godsent, stated this to newsmen in Owerri, while reacting to the call for a single-term of six years for elective office.
The group rather advocated that the election of the president and governors should be conducted separately as it would reduce rigging. It added that in the ongoing constitution amendment, the immunity clause should be removed from the constitution.
According to INC, “The Igbo National Council INC Worldwide has critically x-rayed the proposal by the G-35 members of the Federal House of Representative to propose a single six years tenure for the President and Governors in the ongoing Constitution Amendment by the National Assembly.
“The INC condemns that proposal in its entirety as it will encourage massive corruption in the Governance System in Nigeria. Against this backdrop, we would like the National Assembly to amend the constitution to provide for the Presidential election to be held separately, and for the Governorship to hold separately on different dates with the elections of legislators as this will encourage healthy competition and reduce rigging.
“INC therefore calls on the National Assembly to use the opportunity of the ongoing Constitution Amendment to expunge the Immunity Clause for the office of the President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor.”
